On Radó Island in Győr stands the First World War Memorial (I. világháborús hősi emlékmű), which commemorates the city’s fallen soldiers. It was designed by sculptor Horváy János and inaugurated on July 3, 1938. The tall obelisk was originally crowned by an eternal flame. At the base is a figure of a soldier holding down a lioness – a symbol of courage, strength, and the victory of good over evil. The memorial blends harmoniously into the river landscape of Radó Island and is visible from several bridges. The city of Győr had already planned such a memorial in 1927, which was finally realized after a competition in 1936. Every year on the last Sunday in May, Hungarian Heroes’ Day (Hősök Napja), a wreath-laying ceremony takes place here. Today, the monument is a quiet but powerful symbol of remembrance and peace.
