Liberty Leading the People is an oil on canvas by Eugène Delacroix created in 1830, inspired by the Three Glorious Revolutions. Presented to the public at the Paris Salon of 1831 under the title Scènes de barricades. the painting was then exhibited at the Luxembourg Museum from 1863 then transferred to the Louvre Museum in 1874. Having become a symbol of the triumphant republic, which does not correspond to Delacroix’s intention, the work only established itself in the French collective imagination under the Third Republic. By its allegorical aspect and its political significance, it has frequently been chosen as a symbol of the French Republic, of freedom or of democracy in the world. She remains a media icon in the 21st century through her diversions, borrowings and appropriations of different artistic expressions. restored by Bénédicte Trémolières and Laurence Mugniot (cleaning and reintegration of the pictorial layer) at the Louvre Museum, from October 2023 to April 2024
