More model information

Laas Geel is one of the most important rock art sites in Somaliland. The site is placed on a granite outcrop at the confluence of two seasonal rivers, a key fact to explain the existence of rock art in the outcrop. The name of the site (“the camel’s well” in Somali) makes reference to the availability of water near the surface of the wadis.

This panel shows a section of the rock art from the site featuring cows, human figures, unidentified quadrupeds and several unidentified shapes. The cows are distributed throughout the panel in red and white and depicted upright facing left or turned to the side, some with curved white horns and prominent udders. Interspersed throughout the cows there are human figures depicted upright with arms outstretched.

This model was created using original photographs (12 total archive photos) from the African rock art image project, supported by the Arcadia Fund. For more information visit http://africanrockart.britishmuseum.org/#/article/laas-geel
