Lead mining was an important part of the south Shropshire economy until the late-nineteenth century, and there are extensive remains scattered around what is now a predominantly rural landscape.
The Ladywell mine was opened in the early 19th century and closed in the 1880s. The engine house was built in the 1870s and according to the listing ‘is a rare example in Shropshire of an engine house which originally housed a dual-purpose rotative engine’.
