In 12/28/2016, a LaMia Bolivia Avro RJ85, CP2933 performing a flight from Santa Cruz (BO) to Medellín (CO) with 68 passengers and 9 crew, was descending towards José María Córdova Intl. Airport. In the area of La Ceja, Antioquia at 21:56 local time, the aircraft disappeared from radar screens. Then a search was initiated and the crash site has been located in the municipality of La Unión at the slopes of Cerro Gordo (2625m AMSL) and so near to the VOR RNG. Preliminary results of the Colombian investigation said the pilot failed to refuel in route and was too late in reporting engine flame out caused by the lack of fuel and according to survivors reports, no warning was given to the passengers to fasten seat belts or brace for impact. The aircraft had been transporting Chapecoense soccer team to the biggest game in their history, the final of the Copa Sudamericana against Atlético Nacional.
