This tomb chest is set within a window recess in a chapel off the south transept of Lanercost Priory church. Its front face is carved with decoration consisting of five quatrefoil panels within a moulded frame. The quatrefoils have shields or heraldic scallops at their centre.
On the top is a recumbent effigy, possibly a knight. He wears a short tunic and his hands are clasped in prayer over his chest. His head rests on a pillow and a dog lies at his feet.
We do not know who this tomb originally commemorated. However, in the early 18th century an inscription to John Crow was added. According to local legend Crow broke his neck while climbing in the ruins of the priory.
