Luxor Temple, Emperor’s Chamber, LD 170, 167 L/A, 167 L/B
Luxor Temple, Imperial Cult Chamber/Emperor’s Chamber. December 08, 2021.
LD 170 & LD 167 L/A/B are located on the south wall of the Roman Sanctuary (Imperial Cult Chamber) also known as the Emperor’s (King’s) Chamber, in Luxor Temple.
As part of an 18th Dynasty addition by Amenhotep III, the room was originally a sanctuary devoted to the divine Pharaoh. As its current name suggests, the room went through significant transformation during the late-Roman reformations of Diocletian, finding itself altered to occupy the principia position of standard Roman fortifications. As such, these frescoes are the only example of monumental paintings from the tetrarch era remaining in situ, and perhaps the finest preserved Roman paintings in Egypt.
