The base of the statue is surrounded by eight masks representing famous men, contemporaries of Zacharie Astruc. The central figure, with his left arm raised, brandishes the mask of Victor Hugo in his left hand. Mask of Hugo, Gambetta, Corot, Dumas fils, Berlioz, Carpeaux, Faure, Delacroix, Balzac, Barbey D’aurevilly ( apparently 3 masks are missing, they were suspended has a bronze rope in his right arm which has since disappeared )
