Microsoft paid $2.5 billion to acquire the Minecraft IP back in 2014. In return, it gained control of the most successful sandbox video game ever released and the best-selling unblocked PC game of all time. Clawing back that huge investment is helped by offering the game on a growing number of different platforms (15 and counting), but one platform controlled by Microsoft is expected to lose support imminently.
Windows Central is reporting that Microsoft will end development and support for Minecraft Pocket Edition on Windows 8.1 and Window 10 Mobile devices. The reason is simple: there simply aren’t enough people playing Minecraft on those platforms to make continued investment economically viable. Gamers are still playing Minecraft in their millions, just not on mobile devices running Windows.
