Tapering rectangular slab decorated with a seven-armed floriated cross carved in relief which served as the cover or lid for a stone sarcophagus. The cross consists of a seven armed floriated cross-head with central shaft carved in relief which rises from a pyramidal-shaped base that is decorated with horizontal banding. The floriated cross-head represents the tree of life which is first mentioned in Genesis 2:9 where it was one of two trees in the Garden of Eden. According to wikipedia the Eastern Orthodox Church has traditionally understood the tree of life in Genesis as a prefiguration of the Cross. The pyramidal base of the cross is shaped to represent Mount Golgotha, the hill on which Jesus was crucified.
