More model information

Re-construction of Embarkation Hard Q2 and Mulberry Harbour Construction Platforms at Stanswood (Lepe) in May 1944. There are no known contemporary photos of the site in use. This model is based on archaeological recording, contemporary war diaries and plans, loading tables, known examples from elsewhere and some later aerial photos.

The model shows two of six phoenix caissons have already been launched. The caissons were partially constructed here, launched and then towed up Southampton Water to be finished.

Q2 hard was built first in October 1942 and used before the Mulberry harbour area was added in 1944 (It was managed separately from the hard). Once the Caissons were launched attention turned back to the hard for the final build up to D-Day.

We will be seeking to add more information and detail to this model. Please get in touch if you are aware of any photos or memories of this site. You can read more here: https://nfknowledge.org/contributions/d-day-at-lepe-beach
