“Borglum had long made a practice of keeping in the winch-house, and/or suspended over the mountain, a mask cast from the model of whichever head was being carved at the time. Looking at it a carver could gain a better idea of just how a particular detail he was molding should be shaped and of how it fitted into the composition as a whole.”

This plaster mask of the face of Abraham Lincoln is on display in the Sculptor’s Studio at the foot of Mount Rushmore. It was standing in front of the large plaster maquette of the memorial as it appears today.
The lines crisscrossing it are the marks left after it was made from a multi-part mold.
