More model informationThe Cathedral of Saint Sabino is located in the western part of the old town, and has been rebuilt in the 11th century on ancient archaeological structures (the so called “Succorpo”, the former church of the 5th-6th century), and then consacrarted in the 1292 d.C., with similar features as those of the Basilica of Saint Nicholas, an other important example of Apulian Romanesque architecture.
The lion is placed before the presbitery, and it is flanked by another one on the opposite side. This kind of sculpture is typical of the decorative furnishing of the Romanesque churces (i.e. near the main external portal), and it is likely a roman sculpture re-used during the construction of the medieval phases of the Cathedral.
