More model information

This is a gloriously large “gauge 0” period model railway layout extending through three of the Museum’s arches. The layout is mostly assembled from “museum piece” 1930s model locomotives and rolling stock, along with contemporary period accessories and signalling. The road vehicles are mostly 1930s clockwork Tri-ang Minics. Other marques include Märklin, Bing, Carette Hornby, and JEP.

The layout is not just a model railway, or a collection of antique toyshop pieces, it is an immersive microcosm of public life in the 1930s, as seen through the eyes of toy and model designers of the period.

The current version of the 3D model is a little rough: we’re still trying to decide whether to do further work on cleaning it up, or to suggest that people who want to see it in more detail ought to visit the museum and see the real thing!
