Gimli has many axes he uses in battle but his favorite by far is the double-bladed Battle Axe, It is not seen with him before the Fellowship entered the Mines of Moria so it is most likely that he picked it up in The Chamber of Mazarbul.

He uses it in nearly every fight, including the Fight in Balin’s Tomb, the Skirmish at Amon Hen, and the Battle of Helms Deep. He is never seen using it in the Return of the King as it remains pinned to the back of his cloak.
