LTHTR Extraocular Muscles and the Eyeball3D ModelNoAI
The two types of eye muscles are Intrinsic muscles (theses control focus and light entering the eye) and Extraocular muscles (responsible for controlling eye movement and position). The Extraocular muscles are also referred to as the Extrinsic Muscles.
Extraocular muscles allow the eye to move in all directions of sight along with controlling the eye alignment. They are all situated outside of the eyeball within the orbit of the eye. There are seven Extraocular muscles altogether and include 4 rectus muscles, 2 oblique muscles; all working together to allow the eye movement and control rotation. The levator palpebrae superioris is an additional muscle that raises the upper eyelids keeping it in position. Cranial Nerves that control these muscles are the oculotor nerve, trochlear nerve and the abducens nerve.
