The 126 ft double centerboard schooner Lumberman was built in Grand Haven, Michigan to service mostly the Lake Michigan ports hauling lumber during the booming lumber industry period. In April 1863 while hauling lumber from Kewaunee, WI to Chicago it was caught in a squall and capsized off Oak Creek south of Milwaukee. The crew scampered to the rigging which stayed above water since the depth of water was only 65 ft. They were rescued by the steamer Menominee. There were plans to salvage the ship, but in the end Gillen tug company only removed the masts as navigational hazards. The model was created from 1,862 30-megapixel images shot by Andrew Goodman supported by Kendra Kennedy in the 2025 season. The project was part of a collaboration between Wisconsin Historical Society and GLSPS made possible by gift funding from the “Racine Lighthouse and Maritime Preservation Society.”
