This wooden cradle belonged to the Reverend David and Mrs. Sarah Lyman, missionaries in Hilo, Hawai‘i in the 1800s. The family cradle rocked all eight Lyman children and is currently on display in the Lyman Mission House in Hilo.
The Lyman Mission House was originally built in 1839—it’s the oldest frame structure on Hawai‘i Island—and may be visited by guided tour. The adjacent Museum houses collections of unique cultural artifacts and natural history displays, giving visitors a comprehensive introduction to Hawaiian history, culture, and environment. The Museum’s mission is “to tell the story of Hawai‘i, its islands and people.”
