This inscribed stone slab bears the inscription HIC IACIT MACCVDECCETI (the D is reversed) . It dates to around 550 CE and was one of two early inscribed stones originally located in the churchyard indicating an early church foundation here.
The inscription roughly translates as… Here lies a descendant (MACCV) of DECCETI. Some believe DECCETI refers back to a deity of the Deceangli tribe of North Wales although the etymology of the inscription is difficult and this theory is uncertain. The inscription has closer affinities with Irish inscribed stones.
