Maerl beds are a Priority Marine Feature, a UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) habitat and an OSPAR threatened and declining habitat. Maerl beds are typically found in areas of reasonable tidal flow where fine sediments cannot settle, such as sea loch narrows, but where wave action is not strong enough to break the brittle branches. Their fragility and slow growth makes them susceptable to damage and their coverage at risk of decline. Loch Sween is one of the 11 Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Scotland which protect Maerl beds. They form a fragile but hugely important habitat for various marine species living on or amongst the maerl branches.
