This 3D printed sculpture titled (Make)ograph #1 is a product of critical art making that explores the materiality and reproducibility afforded by the 3D printing medium. Here, I use 3D printing to produce an art object that provides commentary on the nature of collage, particularly within the Surrealist tradition yet through the lens of critical making. Thus my goal here was to look closely at how 3D printing and the medium’s ability to bind and fuse various objects into a single composition can provide possibilities for creating artistic assemblages that borrow from Surrealist concepts of collage. The title of my sculpture is a direct citation to the work of surrealist artist Man Ray and the development of his rayographs developed throughout the 1920s. Ray produced his rayographs through the process of a photogram in which seemingly disparate and often ordinary household objects were arranged on light sensitive paper and exposed to light without the direct use of a camera.
