I just finished watching Puella Magi: Madoka Magica again and really wanted to try modelling one of Mami’s guns. This is my first time trying my hand at weapons modelling which was a wild ride. The most difficult part was probably actually just sifting through reference photos that didn’t match each other or screenshots with impossible geometry. I am happy with how it turned out though I do feel like this gun in particular suits the 2D medium a bit more than it does 3D. The parts I’m most happy with have to be the front of the barrel as well as the detailing on the sides. I’ve gotten quite a bit more practice in when it comes to doing high to low poly bakes which helped a lot here. If I were to go back and change anything, I feel like the base of the gun feels very boxy and so I wish I spent a bit more time smoothing things out before bevelling everything, as well as just general tweaking.
