Mandible. The left mandibular specimen contains 7 teeth (3-2 to 3-8 inclusive), all in excellent condition. At the external midpoint of the base of this portion of the mandible, there is a large semicircular defect, which represents a bullet entrance wound. It is well demarcated, and has two linear radiating fractures emanating from it. One radiating fracture extends into the vertical ramus, and the other into the alveolus (socket) for 3-8. On the medial surface is a large region of bone bevelling, especially posteriorly. There is also bone splintering and fracturing on this surface. If one lines up the entrance wound and the exit wound, it is apparent that the permanent wound track in the bone is diagonal in orientation – from anterolateral to posteromedial.
