Manhattan est l’un des cinq arrondissements de New-York. Sa superficie est de 59,5 km2 et sa population de 1 537 195 habitants. L’explorateur hollandais Peter Minuit achète aux Indiens, en 1626, l’île de Manhattan pour 60 florins. Il fonde la colonie de New-Amsterdam qui sera ensuite prise par les Anglais en 1661 et renommée New York (en l’honneur du duc d’York).

Manhattan is one of the five boroughs of New York. Its area is 59.5 km2 and its population is 1,537,195. The Dutch explorer Peter Minuit bought the island of Manhattan from the Indians in 1626 for 60 florins. He founded the colony of New Amsterdam which was then taken by the English in 1661 and renamed New York (in honor of the Duke of York).
