In 1925, the Sarasota Grammar School opened as the first public school in Sarasota built specifically for African American children. Later, it was renamed Booker Elementary. Additionally, the middle and high schools in Newtown were named for Emma E. Booker, an educator at the Booker Elementary School. Education for the Black community was anything but equal. Schools for Black children were inadequate. Despite the educational environment, students often excelled with the help of the nurturing and committed educators who taught them.
