This silk ball gown was worn by Mrs W.H. (Maria) Collins of Geelong to a ball given in honour of His Royal Highness Prince Alfred the Duke of Edinburgh’s visit to Geelong, 2 December 1867. The ball was held at the Mechanics’ Institute, Geelong. This dress demonstrates the effect of corsetry on Victorian women, with it’s tiny waist. Geelong Advertiser, 16 December 1867 describes Prince Alfred’s triumphal visit to Victoria. Prince Alfred, second son of Queen Victoria, toured Australia in 1867.
