Princess Maria Theresa of Austria was born on May 13, 1717 in Vienna. The reform friendly Archduchess of Austria and Queen of Hungary and Bohemia introduced the general tax liability, which for the first time also nobles and clergy concerned. To uphold law and order, she created a supreme court. Compulsory education was introduced by the monarch. Maria Theresa also doubled the strength of the army and transformed the imperial army into an Austrian army. In 1751 she had built the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt.
The monument designed by Hans Gasser was erected in 1862. The bronze statue shows the empress in a baroque robe, on the pedestal there are personifications of the virtues of justice, religion, fortitude and wisdom.
