The Maria Theresa Monument in Vienna, unveiled in 1888, is one of the most important monuments in Austria and stands centrally on Maria Theresa Square. It honors the Habsburg ruler Maria Theresa (1717-1780), a formative figure in Austrian history. Designed by Carl von Hasenauer and Gottfried Semper, the monumental sculptures were created by Kaspar von Zumbusch. The 19-metre-high monument impresses with its artistic design: Maria Theresa sits on a throne with a sceptre and document, surrounded by 24 bronze figures, including advisors and generals. Allegories symbolize political and cultural achievements. The monument took 14 years to build, from 1874 to 1888, and weighs 44 tons. With a base area of 632 square meters, it blends harmoniously into the square, flanked by the buildings of the Museum of Art and Natural History. It symbolizes the modernizations and reforms of the empress and is a tourist highlight of Vienna.
