Marjatta-aihe liittyy Kalevalan tarinaan, jossa Marjatta tulee raskaaksi puolukasta ja saa pojan, joka syrjäyttää Väinämöisen nousten Karjalan kuninkaaksi. Kertomuksen on tulkittu kuvaavan, kuinka neitseellisesti syntynyt kristus syrjäyttää vanhan kansauskon.

The Marjatta theme comes from Kalevala, where Marjatta becomes pregnated from a lingonberry and gives birth to a son who dethrones Väinämöinen, becoming the king of Karelia. The story is interpreted to depict how Christ, born of Virgin Mary, replaces the old folk religion.
