More model informationThe Market Cross is now housed in the Visitor Centre. It was reassembled from fragments found on the site and it may have originally stood in open ground opposite the west doorway of the cathedral. It bears a figure of the crowned Christ wearing a knee-length tunic. Beneath is the figure of an ecclesiastic and at the bottom two further figures. The ornamentation resembles that found on metalwork parallels, including the twelfth-century Cross of Cong, and it is possible that it was inspired by the miraculous ‘Speaking Cross’, one of the medieval treasures of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin.
