More model information

The Marsala Punic Ship, from the 3rd century BC, is a wreck discovered in 1969 in an area called Punta Scario in the harbor of Marsala in western Sicily, Italy, near the Aegadian Islands. The Marsala Ship’s “nationality” was identified by the Punic inscriptions marked on the keel and other timbers by its Punic builders from Carthage. This model is 3D laser scanning and photogrammetry model of the surviving timbers of the Marsala Ship. The model was created with 93 laser scans using a Faro Focus S70, registered with Faro Scene, and 2057 photographs combined with the laser scanning using Reality Capture. The project is a combined effort between the CNRS (France and the University of Southampton, and is funded by the Honor Frost Foundation. The goals include detailed surveying of the ship remains to aid conservation and a possible digital ship reconstruction to better understand the original vessel.
