More model informationThe Cabell Dam. Begun in 1854, this large crib dam was designed to impound the James River below Eagle Rock, Virginia to feed water into a nine-mile section of the James River & Kanawha Canal above Buchanan. The dam was designed to be 23 feet high and included a canal lock on the southern side and a river lock, for batteaux, on the norther abutment. Today, the massive structure is marked by a grid of timbers spiked together and embedded in the river bottom. At low water, seen here, the base of the Cabell Lock may be seen. This is one of the largest crib dams constructed in Virginia.
