Dalkey Island Martello Tower (No. 9) (SMR DU023-029009-) is one of 27 Martello towers and 2 batteries which were constructed in the early 19th Century to protect the Dublin coastline from potential invasion from Napoleon and the French Army. The Martello tower is located on the western side of Dalkey island at its highest point and has a commanding view across from Sandymount in the north to Bray in the south and is accompanied by a three gun battery on the southern tip of the island. It was constructed in 1804 -1805 from dressed granite ashlar masonry. Internally there was a single floor level which contained a gunner’s room and magazine. It was originally constructed without a doorway with access gained through a ladder secured to the roof platform which contained two 24-pounder guns mounted on the circular gun platform. In the 1850’s the tower was used by the Coast Guard and by 1886 all military personnel had evacuated the island.
