Gift in memory of May Gruber, 2013.13
Worn with a full body costume, male didagur masks with their long noses represent spirits of the natural world. They participate in the ceremonies young men undergo leading to manhood.
Mrs. Gruber travelled to New Guinea in 1984 and purchased work in Korogo on the Sepik River. Works of African and Oceanic art from the Gruber Collection came to FAM at the recommendation of the Currier Museum in Manchester, NH.
