More model informationMastodons were similar to elephants in size and general shape, but may be distinguished from them by the fact that their teeth possessed but two or three ridges and most molars were in place simultaneously. Some forms also possessed both upper and lower paired tusks. Mastodons persisted in North America throughout the Pleistocene with many skeletons being found in post-glacial swamp deposits.
