Matías de Gálvez y Gallardo was born in 1717 in Malaga, Spain. He was the Captain General of Guatemala from 1779 to 1783, and Viceroy of New Spain from 1783 to 1784. He lived in Tenerife from 1757 to 1778, where you can find this sculpture located in Puerto de la Cruz.
