It is a massive bronze block with eight faces: the main two are hexagonal and the other six, rectangular. The artefact was discovered in a good conservation state, however traces of use can be observed on its surface. Matrices of this type of were used in order to decorate thin sheets of precious metal (gold and silver) or of copper based alloy. The foils were pressed into the hollow designs with the help of tools made of relatively soft materials (mostly wood, but also antler or copper). In antiquity, with this type of matrix were produced medallions, phalerae, ornaments for metalware, caskets and furniture, jewellery parts etc. A tool of this kind was quite expensive, therefore the entire space was used. The pattern combination on the matrix corresponded probably to the tastes and preferences of the clients of the goldsmith which owned it. The real and mythical bestiary represented on the item is rich and varied.
