Found at the Met in NYC from the late 8th-9th century.
This column depicts a richly dressed Maya ruler with an enormous tiered feathered headdress. The figure, flanked by an attendant dwarf. also wears a collar with three images of human heads and a long beaded necklace. In his right hand he carreis a hooked obsidian scepter, and his left arm is hidden behind a shield. THe ruler’s face was originally painted red but was intentionaly damaged in antiquity. Carved columns are rare in Maya art but appear in the Puuc region of the Yucatan Peninsula.
