More model informationIn 1859 the US War Department adopted the McClellan saddle for use by the cavalry. It remained the standard issue saddle throughout the cavalry’s history.
The McClellan saddle has the heavy frame of a western saddle but without the roping horn. These saddletrees may also be reinforced with metal plates or irons like the English trees.
There is no seat or padding added by the saddle maker, so the McClellan saddle looks very much like the tree itw as built upon. Riders used slots cut in the saddletree to attach gear securely to the saddle.
