More model informationMechanical thrombectomy via stent retriever is one of the main interventions for ischemic stroke. A catheter is inserted into the femoral artery and guided to the affected site. A balloon on the catheter is temporarily inflated to prevent blood flow interfering with clot retrieval. A coiled wire is then straightened, fed through the catheter, and placed distally to the clot, at which point it re-coils to fill the lumen. The expanded coil is used to retrieve the clot and restore blood flow to the affected area.
