Mechanic's Exchange west infill, Sacramento CA3D ModelNoAI
Built by Henry Treichler c1860, the Mechanic’s Exchange Hotel is located in the Old Sacramento historic district. Situated on the banks of the Sacramento River, this region experienced repeated flooding. After a particularly devastating flood in 1862, this area of the city was raised approx. 10 feet. In the 20st century, modernization gradually moved trade to the east and Old Sacramento became a slum. Beginning in 1960’s, the city took action to revitalize and renovate the area. Photos show restoration work continued on this building through the late 1970s.
Constructed of brick, the structure today is 8 bays with a 3 story central rectangular floor plan. One of the early 1860s additions can be seen on the left of its front elevation, and consists of 4 bays and 2 stories. Evidence of a fire escape can be seen on the west elevation. In addition, the remnants of a doorway and window remain, likely filled in as a result of the project to raise the street level.
