Medical Syringe 3D Model
This medical syringe dates to the late 19th century, and was recovered from archaeological excavations at the site of what is now Detroit’s Renaissance Center.
Prior to 20th century medicine, the treatment of STDs was a half-hazard practice. This medical syringe would have been used to inject seditives, or astringents to cope with affliction. Common substances used included olive oil or opium to cope with pain, or mercurial compounds to attempt to cure the disease. This unfortunate reality of the times led to the saying “A night with Venus, a lifetime with Mercury”.
