This fifteenth century capital is now built into a retaining wall in the burying ground at Greyfriars, Edinburgh. Although it is possible that it may have come from the medieval friary church, it is likely to have come from the nearby Trinity College Church, which was founded in 1460 by the Queen, Mary of Gueldres. This survived until 1848 when it was dismantled to make way for Waverley Station. The plan to rebuild the church on a new site was long delayed, and over time many of the carved stones were appropriated by Edinburgh residents to serve as garden ornaments. Drawings prepared prior to Trinity’s demolition show it possessed capitals of very similar scale and profile to that in Greyfriars.
