More model informationSt Mary’s Abbey was founded in York before the 11th century and was restablished as a Benedictine monastery by 1068. Made from magnesian limestone, these defensive walls were originally constructed in 1266 and were subsequently heightened, fortified with battlements, and extended in 1318. The abbey was reduced to ruins in 1539 by King Henry VIII during the dissolution of the monasteries.
This remaining section of the defensive wall contains a large stone featuring a mason’s mark. These marks were inscribed by masons to identify who carried out the work on the stone to ensure they recieved compensation for their work.
