Megaladapis (NHMW-Geo 1908/0006/0003)3D Model
3D scan of a plaster cast skeleton of Megaladapis edwardsi, an extinct species of giant lemurs. With a body mass of about 50 kg, Megaladapis was one of the largest lemurs ever. It was a slow-moving, bulky creature with a body posture similar to that of modern koalas. These animals once inhabited the island of Madagascar. The arrival of humans on the island 2,300 years ago lead to a rapid decline and final extinction of this species about 500 years ago.
This cast of Megaladapis edwardsi cannot be found in the exhibition Halls of the NHM Vienna.
