The lettering is in three different styles and the years have not been fully filled in. I assume that the original carved area of the stone was commisioned and completed sometime before death, with further text carved when there was a suitably skilled person in the area - then year details could be filled in after death - either incribed into the stone or painted on. I have been unable to find a record of when Robert Hunter was born. Robert built nearby Lunna House around 1663, he married Margaret Leslie in 1678, they had 11 children before Robert died c.1693-5. William Hunter was born in 1679 and died in 1702.
