The Statue of Mencey Adjona is located on the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias in Candelaria, in front of the Basilica of Candelaria. On the seaside of the square nine giant, over 5m in height, statues of the Guanche Kings can be found in a row. The statues are placed on sockets of volcanic stone.
The nine statues were created by the contemporary, canarian sculptor José Abad, setup 1993. José Abad was born 1942 in la Laguna. The usage of iron makes his work unique. In the 1980’s he started creating monumental works for public spaces.
Mencey Adjona’s ruled over a more then 400 square km extended territory, which includes the todays communities of Fasnia, Arico, Granadilla de Abona, San Miguel und Vilaflor. Adjona signed peace with Pedro de Vera, govenour of Gran Canaria, in 1490. He was ratifying the agreement with Alonso Fernández de Lugo in 1494. During the conquest his menceyato was part of the bando de paces, colaborating with the conquistadores.
