Meningococcus is a severe type of bacterial infection that can cause brain damage and death. It is caused by the Neisseria meningitidis bacteria, which is spread from person to person through respiratory droplets in close proximity or through direct contact with an infected individual’s throat secretions. Meningococcus causes inflammation in the membrane that covers the brain and spinal cord, leading to serious consequences such as swelling of the brain tissue (cerebral hemorrhage), blood leakage into either side of your body (hematemesis), impaired breathing, heart failure or shock. In some cases, hearing loss may also occur due to temporary fluid build up on one side of your head.
