More model informationThis mercury tube barometer was made by Davis Derby in around 1800 for use in the mining industry. It was used to indicate changes in atmospheric pressure. When pressure is exceptionally low methane may be drawn from coal in the mine, causing a build-up of ‘firedamp’, an explosive gas. The arrow indicates the point at which this may happen.
This model was created in coproduction with our volunteers.
