Roman Mercury group on pedestal. The almost childlike god corresponds to the polycletic standing scheme. The herald’s staff is very large in relation to the figure, and the eight intertwined serpents extend far beyond the god’s shoulder. The pedestal is semi-circular with projecting foot and top plates. The accompanying animals are a ram to the right of the god and an eagle to the left, the latter untypical for Mercury, since in addition to the ram, it was above all the cock, he-goat and tortoise that were sacred to the god. On his head Mercury wears the winged traveling hat (petasos). The two cast bars connecting the head wings, but also the two feet, are striking. Gallic product? Bronze; h 13,2 cm; 2nd-3rd century AD.
